The wood on this odd custom MG is maple; interior detailing is curly maple.

The owner of this hand-built MG said it took him five years to complete it.

This door detail shows the intricacy of the placements of screws, and highlights some of the maple grain.

snapshot • Rico becoming art

Rico clutches at paper dropped like rain from the ceiling of the Hirshhorn Museum in DC. The paper is dropped automatically - but carefully regulated - from the ceiling by machines, and glides down, gently accumulating on the floor. It's an interesting piece by the American multi-media artist Ann Hamilton. On one of my visits to the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA) in North Adams, the big room (the largest indoor art space in the country) was outfitted with a larger version of this piece (I'll post some photos of this piece later), which included sound, with speakers moving up and down within the space. It was a very powerful piece. It's also interesting to see how people interact with the paper on the floor, or as it descends, leaf-like from the high, beamed industrial ceiling. Kids love it. And as you can see in the above photo, so do some adults.

snapshot • luminous river

The Connecticut River originates somewhere in Canada (what doesn't?), and meanders through Pittsburgh, St. Johnsbury, Hanover, Brattleboro, Greenfield, Northampton, Springfield, Harftford, Middletown and Old Saybrook before emptying into the Long Island Sound. As rivers go, it's a good one. It has been cleaned up in recent years, and is utilized by swimmers, boaters and fisherman along its length. Once in a while, I would stop along its banks on my drive between Amherst and Northampton and soak up its calm beauty.

snapshot • Moses

When he's not busy parting the Monterey Bay, he serves up a mean cup of coffee. Mention my blog, tell him he's beautiful, and he'll take good care of you. That's Moses at Cafe La Strada, Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa, Monterey, California. Good lookin' out, babe!

Ashtray, Monterey Plaza Hotel, Monterey, 2009.

Here's something I've never seen before: when they clean out the (outdoor) ashtrays, they make an impression in the sand of their logo: two dolphins and (I guess) a wave. I can't decide whether I think it's really cool, or just kinda weird. It's a classy place. Something else here I've never seen - and I've been in a lot of hotels, although maybe not classy hotels - little white rugs under the urinals, and little white cloth towels to dry your hands. Sarah works in the Boatworks, in the hotel building. There is a beautiful plaza overlooking the bay, with nice teak tables and chairs, and a sitting area under a trellis next to the Cafe La Strada, where they have really good coffee and pastries. Lots of glass, and fancy woodwork. There's a sumptuous spa on the top floor with a hot tub overlooking the bay, and a discount for locals. Schooners bar and grill has outdoor seating on the bay, and it's a really nice place to have an iced tea - and it's good iced tea. And everybody's so nice!
